A recent issue of Electric Shock Magazine contained interviews with Final Fantasy XIII director, Motomu Toriyama, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII director, Tetsuya Nomura. Though a full translation is not yet available, some bits of information have come out.

Toriyama talks about the differences between the initial conception of Final Fantasy XIII on the PS2, and the final version that is in production on the PS3, comparing the situation to the differences they saw between games on the PS1 and PS2 platforms. He continues by saying that the theme of Final Fantasy XIII is determination in the face of adversity.

Nomura talks about the White Engine. Final Fantasy Versus XIII currently being developed on version 1 of the engine, but versions 2 and 3 are in the making, meaning that Versus could potentially have even better graphics that what has been seen in the XIII trailer. He also mentions that the scenario for Versus is not yet complete, and has been put on hold pending further development of the White Engine, and that the battle system will likely be similar to that of XIII. Additionally, he hints that players may get to use multiple weapons during battle.

Not so much progress as we thought?

It seems that the earlier reports of Final Fantasy XIII's progress were just a tad on the high side. Final Fantasy XIII, previously said to be around 13% complete, now stands at a mere 3%. Versus, also gets a bit of a drop, from 1.6% to 1%.

No one seems quite certain which magazine this information comes from, but the scan seems real enough. We'll keep searching for verification of these figures.

According to Japanese mag Otona Fami, despite the lack of news in the days long after TGS 2006, Square Enix is making some progress on their upcoming titles.

* Final Fantasy XIII (PlayStation 3): 13%
* Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PlayStation 3): 1.3%
* Itadaki Street DS (Nintendo DS): 50%
* Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (Nintendo DS): 40%
* Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ (PlayStation 2): 130% (Based on the two games included with this release: Kingdom Hearts II and Re: Kingdom Hearts: CoM)

So things are looking up for FFXIII, which is nearly a quarter of the way finished. Poor Versus XIII, though, is definitly lagging behind.
